Kathmandu: In a landmark ruling, the Kathmandu District Court has sentenced former district judge Bhuwan Giri to seven years in prison on charges of marital rape. Additionally, the court has mandated that Giri pay Rs 300,000 in compensation to the victim.

The verdict was delivered by a bench led by Judge Durga Bhusal on Tuesday. This sentencing follows an earlier conviction on May 26, where the court found Giri guilty of rape. The official punishment and the compensation order were announced in the recent court session.

Bhuwan Giri was taken into custody after being suspended from his judicial position in the Kapilvastu district court following the filing of the complaint against him. This case marks a significant judicial decision in addressing the issue of marital rape within Nepal's legal framework.
